Specialist Support

If you are experiencing abuse, harm or exploitation, you may be able to receive support from one of our specialist advocates. You do not need to understand the different job titles or know which service you need. We will listen to what is happening and help you understand what support may be available.

IDVA / IDAA – Domestic Abuse Support

An Independent Domestic Violence Adviser (IDVA) or Independent Domestic Abuse Advocate (IDAA) supports people experiencing domestic abuse. Domestic abuse does not only mean physical violence. It can include controlling or threatening behaviour, emotional abuse, economic abuse, harassment or being frightened by someone close to you. Domestic abuse can happen between partners or ex-partners, or between family members. This could include abuse from an adult son or daughter, grandchild or another relative.

How can an IDVA or IDAA help me?

Your IDVA or IDAA can:

  • Listen to what is happening and talk through your concerns
  • Help you think about your safety
  • Explain your options and what could happen next
  • Support you if you are thinking about reporting the abuse to the police, including helping you understand what may happen next
  • Help you understand legal protections that may be available, such as a non-molestation order or occupation order, and help you access appropriate legal support
  • Help you communicate with services such as the police, housing, social care or other agencies
  • Support you through meetings and other processes where appropriate
Help make sure your wishes and views are heard

They will work with you, helping you make informed choices about what feels right for you.

ISVA – Sexual Violence Support

An Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) supports people who have experienced sexual violence or sexual abuse. Sexual abuse can take different forms and may have happened recently or a long time ago. You can ask for support even if you have not reported what happened to the police.

How can an ISVA help me?

An ISVA can:
  • Listen to you and help you understand your options
  • Provide practical and emotional support
  • Explain what may happen if you choose to report to the police
  • Help you understand the criminal justice process
  • Support you when dealing with other services
You do not have to manage the process on your own.

OPVA – Older People’s Violence Advocate

An Older People’s Violence Advocate (OPVA) provides specialist support for older people experiencing abuse, harm or exploitation. This could involve a partner, family member, friend, carer or another person in your life. It may include physical or emotional abuse, financial abuse, neglect, controlling behaviour or other forms of harm. For example, you might be worried because someone is taking or misusing your money, pressuring you into financial decisions, treating you badly, neglecting your needs, frightening you or taking advantage of you.

You may not know what type of abuse you are experiencing. You do not need to work this out before asking for help.

How can an OPVA help me?

An OPVA can:
  • Listen to what is happening and understand what matters to you
  • Help you identify any risks or concerns
  • Talk through ways of keeping yourself safer
  • Explain your rights, choices and possible next steps
  • Help you communicate with other organisations
  • Advocate for your wishes and help make sure your voice is heard

The support will be based around you, your circumstances and what you want to happen.

Not Sure What Support You Need? You do not need to work this out before contacting us.

Tell us what is happening in your own words. We can listen, talk through your options and help identify the most appropriate support for you.

You may simply feel worried, uncomfortable or that something is not right. You do not need to know what type of abuse it is or which specialist service you need before speaking to us.
